A method and apparatus for the robust implementation and protection of Asynchronous Transfer Mode, ATM, traffic over a Synchronous Optical Network, SONET, Unidirectional Path Switched Ring, UPSR (100). The traditional SONET bridging function is eliminated for the ATM traffic in favor of a selector function. The selector function occurs at the ingress of the ATM traffic to the UPSR and directs the ATM traffic to its destination via a virtual path over the UPSR. The ATM traffic is protected from both SONET failures and ATM failures by an Intra-Ring Communication IRC protocol (300). The IRC protocol governs failure detection and the notification of the SONET nodes on the UPSR of the failure and any protection switch that may be necessary (750, 800).

L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant la mise en oeuvre et la protection cohérentes du mode de transfert asynchrone, MTA, du trafic sur un anneau à commutation de conduit unidirectionnel, UPSR (100), d'un réseau optique synchrone, SONET. La fonction passerelle classique du SONET est éliminée au profit d'une fonction de sélection. Celle-ci survient au niveau du trafic MTA en direction de l'UPSR et oriente le trafic MTA vers sa destination par un trajet virtuel sur l'UPSR. Le trafic MTA est protégé contre les défaillances de SONET et de MTA par un protocole de communication intra-anneau, IRC (300). Ledit protocole permet de gérer la détection de défaillances et la notification de noeuds de SONET sur l'UPSR de la défaillance, ainsi que toute commutation de protection qui s'avérerait nécessaire (750, 800).
