A virtual pet chatting method includes: sending, by a first virtual pet, a natural language question to a second virtual pet; and generating, by the second virtual pet, a natural language response sentence according to the natural language question, after understanding the natural language and performing reasoning taking into account attributes of a virtual pet. A virtual pet questioning and answering server includes a natural language understanding module and a response sentence generating module.
