Microtiter-like plates containing virtual wells formed by an arrangement of relatively hydrophilic domains within relatively hydrophobic fields are provided. Assay mixtures are confined to the hydrophilic domains of the virtual wells by the edges of the hydrophobic fields. The use of virtual wells allows one to perform homogeneous and capture and wash high throughput screening assays with assay mixtures having volumes on the order of about 100 nl to 10µl. Virtual wells also provide a means of easily moving fluids, which is particularly useful for simultaneous additions needed for kinetic studies and flash detection and washing. Methods for controlling evaporation during the dispensing of reagents as well as during incubation of high throughput screening utilizing microtiter-like plates containing virtual wells are also provided. The present invention also provides an inexpensive, disposable device for transferring small volumes of an entire array of compounds from a first microtiter-like plate to a second microtiter-like plate, preserving the spatial arrangement of the compounds. Methods of manufacturing and using the device are also provided.

L'invention concerne des plaques du type plaques de microtitration contenant des puits virtuels formés par un agencement de domaines relativement hydrophiles de champs relativement hydrophobes. Des mélanges à analyser sont confinés dans les domaines hydrophiles des puits virtuels par les bords des champs hydrophobes. L'utilisation de puits virtuels permet de réaliser des criblages homogènes à haut rendement à phase de piégeage et de lavage avec des mélanges à analyser ayant des volumes de l'ordre de 100 nl à 10 µl. Ces puits virtuels permettent également le déplacement rapide de fluides, ce qui est particulièrement utile pour les additions simultanées nécessaires aux études cinétiques et à la détection et au lavage rapides. L'invention concerne également des procédés de régulation de l'évaporation lors de la répartition des réactifs et lors de l'incubation de criblages à haut rendement utilisant des plaques du type plaques de microtitration contenant des puits virtuels. La présente invention concerne enfin un dispositif jetable et bon marché permettant de transférer de petits volumes d'un groupe entier de composés d'une première plaque du type plaque de microtitration à une seconde plaque du type plaque de microtitration, tout en préservant l'agencement spatial des composés; ainsi que les procédés de fabrication et d'utilisation dudit dispositif.
