Reagents and methods are disclosed for modifying a fabric substrate in order to inactivate viruses, and particularly lipid-enveloped viruses, upon contact. Such substrates can be modified by photochemically immobilizing hydrophilic polymers containing both quaternary ammonium groups and hydrocarbon chains, resulting in a localized surfactancy capable of disrupting lipid-enveloped viruses upon contact with the substrate. Substrates of the invention can be fabricated into the form of articles for medical and related use.

La présente invention décrit des réactifs et des procédés modifiant un substrat d'étoffe afin de rendre inactifs des virus par contact, plus particulièrement les virus entourés de lipides. On modifie de tels substrats en immobilisant photochimiquement les polymères hydrophiles contenant à la fois des groupes ammonium quaternaire et des chaînes hydrocarbure. Il en résulte une propriété tensioactive localisée susceptible de désorganiser les virus entourés de lipides par contact avec le substrat. Les substrats de cette invention peuvent être fabriqués sous la forme d'articles médicaux ou d'usage similaire.
