ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A linear viscoelastic aqueous liquid automatic dishwasher detergent composition comprising water from 0 to about 5% of a compound having the formula R2COOX wherein x is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and an alkali metal cation and R, is selected from the group consisting of phenyl groups and substitute phenyl groups, from 0 to 5% by weight of a chlorine bleach stable, water dispersible or soluble organic detergent, from 5 to 40% by weight of at least one alkali metal tripolyphosphate, up to 20% by weight of a chlorine bleach compound and 1.2 to 2.0 weight percent of at least one branched crosslinked polycarboxylate-type thickening agent having a molecular weight of at least 1,000,000.
