A B S T R A C T Cellulose ethers or esters of high molecular weight are treated in a known manner with a hydrogen halide to degrade them to a very low molecular weight. Then they are decolorized by treatment with gaseous sulfur dioxide. Remaining traces of hydrogen halide and/or sulfur dioxide are conveniently removed by treatment with a mild alkaline treatment, such as ammonia or sodium bicarbonate.
