ABSTRACT Aqueous compositions containing alkylamido betaines exhibit surprisingly high viscosities in the presence of certain water-soluble inorganic or organic salts, without the need for additional thickening agents. A first group of salts is effective both in the presence and absence of anionic surfactants, while a second group is effective only in the presence of anionic surfactants. The compositions may be used for many household and personal cleaning products, for example, lavatory cleaners, dishwashing compositions and shampoos.
