The invention relates to vise-grip or expanding pliers comprising two plier arms (4, 5) which are joined in the manner of a scissor-leg joint and on the one end have handle sections (6, 8) and on the other end clamping sections (7, 9) which can be moved towards each other when the handles are actuated. The two plier arms (4, 5) can be fixed in different clamping positions which vary with the distance between the two clamping sections (7, 9). According to the invention a toothed segment (11) which is assigned to one plier arm (4) and whose teeth (12) are engaged by a detent (13) assigned to the handle section of the other plier arm (5) is provided for, so that a knuckle joint area is obtained which is largely free of distorting forces.
