A method is provided for producing a visual image of ions in a thin frozen tissue sample. The tissue sample is placed in contact with a membrane including a water-soluble gel or a plastic film, which may be either hydrophilic or hydrophobic, which has a fluorescent or colour ion indicator which fluoresces or changes colour under light of a particular wavelength incorporated in, or placed on, its surface, The thin frozen tissue sample is then subjected to light having a wavelength to cause the ion indicator to fluoresce or change colour. This procedure, which produces a visual image of ions in the skin sample, can be used to diagnose many skin conditions.
