A visual signaling device uses wide-dispersion LED elements of multiple colors mounted on a compact light board. The light board on which the LEDs are mounted is positioned perpendicular to the axis of a cylindrical lens section of the device, and the wide-dispersion light from the LEDs is diffracted and diffused by the cylindrical lens section to provide a generally uniform output light distribution. A microprocessor-based control circuit received in the device housing is programmable to operate the LEDs to generate various lighting patterns and colors in response to external control signals. A variety of perceived output colors may be generated by sequentially operating LEDs of different colors at a sufficiently high rate to create a color mixing effect. A unique "color triads" arrangement of LEDS of three different colors on the light board allows an even and symmetrical distribution the color LEDs, thereby providing enhanced blending of the outputs of the color LEDs.
