ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: The present invention relates to a compound having the general formula (II) Image (II) in all its isomeric forms, in which Z is selected from the group consisting of Image wherein R2 is alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and the dotted line indicates that the compound may have an additional double bond. These compounds can be used to make inter- mediate compounds having the general formula I Image (I) in which R1 is H, an alkyl, arylalkyl or an aliphatic acyl radical; X and Y together provide an additional bond or Y is OH and X is H; and in which the dotted line can represent an additional bond. The compounds of general formula (I) can in turn be used to make .alpha.-tocopherol or a 6-0-derivative thereof.
