A decoder device (VD) used for decoding digital messages according to the Viterbi convolutional decoding algorithm. This Viterbi decoder (VD) is integrated in a portion of a single electronic chip which is included in a receiver of a handportable mobile station of a digital cellular radio system. The decoder (VD) includes a first module (VITALFA) to calculate transition probabilities for the possible state transitions between two successive states of the decoder, and a second module (VIPROB) to calculate, in function of the state transition probabilities, path probabilities for the possible paths constituted by successive state transitions and ending in each of these states, and to select the path having the highest path probability value. The first/second module (VITALFA/VIPROB) of the device (VD) further calculates a state transition/path bit error rate which is function of the difference between the bits (softbits) received in the first module (VITALFA) and the bits (coded bits) expected for a same state transition/path respectively.

Décodeur (VD) servant à décoder des messages numériques conformément à l'algorithme de décodage convolutif de Viterbi. Ce décodeur Viterbi (VD) est intégré dans une partie d'une puce électronique d'un récepteur faisant partie d'une station mobile portative d'un système radio cellulaire numérique. Le décodeur (VD) comprend un premier module (VITALFA) pour calculer des probabilités de transitions entre deux états successifs du décodeur, et un deuxième module (VIPROB) pour calculer, en fonction des probabilités de transitions d'état, les probabilités de trajets constitués par les transitions d'état successives et aboutissant à chacun de ces états, et pour sélectionner le trajet ayant la plus grande valeur de probabilité de trajet. En outre, le premier/deuxième module (VITALFA/VIPROB) du dispositif (VD) calcule un taux d'erreur binaire applicable aux transitions d'état/trajets, lequel est fonction de la différence entre les bits (« softbits ») reçus dans le premier module (VITALFA) et les bits (bits codés) attendus pour un même état de transition/trajet.
