A Viterbi decoding method and a circuit therefor are provided, for demodulating a reproduced signal from a magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus. According to the Viterbi decoding method, a reproduced signal whose waveform is equalized by an equalizer is input and positive and negative peak data are obtained by two comparators whose thresholds are interlocked. Then, the data is divided by a predetermined time to be grouped. After Viterbi-decoding the grouped data in the reverse direction, final decoded data of the present group and initial decoded data of the next group are concatenated. The Viterbi decoding circuit has simple structure in which a shift register is adopted as a major constituent, without an analog-to-digital converter and microprocessor.

L'invention est constituée par une méthode et un circuit de décodage de Viterbi servant à démoduler un signal lu par un appareil d'enregistrement-lecture magnétique. Selon la méthode de décodage de Viterbi, un signal lu dont la forme d'onde est égalisée par un égaliseur est introduit dans le circuit de décodage et des données sur les pointes positives et négatives sont obtenues par deux comparateurs dont les seuils sont asservis l'un à l'autre. Ces données sont réparties selon des périodes de temps prédéterminées pour être groupées. Après le décodage de Viterbi des données groupées dans le sens inverse, les données décodées finales du groupe du moment et les données décodées initiales du groupe suivant sont concaténées. Le circuit de décodage de Viterbi a une structure simple dans laquelle un registre à décalage est utilisé comme élément constitutif majeur sans nécessiter de convertisseur analogique-numérique ni de microprocesseur.
