Disclosed is a vitreous carbon-active carbon composite material wherein the vitreous carbon is derived from a polycarbodiimide resin, a process for producing the vitreous carbon-active carbon composite by firing a mixture of a polycarbodiimide resin and an active carbon, or a molded article of desired shape prepared from the mixture, in a non-oxidizing atmosphere; and a polarizable electrode for use in electric double layer capacitor, which consists of the above vitreous carbon-active carbon composite material. The electrode is free from the drawbacks of prior art, has a low internal resistance, causes a low degree of powder detachment, has large electric capacitance per unit weight and per unit volume, and can be produced easily, quickly and inexpensively.

a présente invention décrit un matériau composite carbone vitreux-carbone actif dans lequel le carbone vitreux est dérivé d'une résine polycarbodiimide, un procédé pour produire le composé carbone vitreux-carbone actif en chauffant un mélange de résine polycarbodiimide et de carbone actif, ou un article moulé à la forme désirée à partir du mélange, en atmosphère non oxydante; et une électrode polarisable pour utilisation dans un condensateur électrique double couche, laquelle est constituée dudit matériau composite carbone vitreux-carbone actif. L'électrode ne démontre pas les inconvénients qui se manifestaient dans l'état antérieur de la technique, elle a une faible résistance interne, cause peu de détachement de poudre, a une forte capacité électrique par unité de poids et par unité de volume et on peut la produire facilement, rapidement et à peu de frais.
