ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A surgical instrument comprises a motor mounted in and contained in a housing, and a removable sheath disposable over the housing to surround the housing and thereby to protect the housing from external materials and contamination. The sheath defines an annular lip securely engageable between a cutter assembly and the housing to prevent contamination materials from entering the sheath means. The cutter assembly is removably mountable on the housing and comprises a tube projecting from a body, a blade positioned in the tube and a drive transfer mechanism mounted in the body, the drive transfer mechanism connecting the blade to the motor for movement of the blade when the motor means is activated. The tube has a wall defining an aperture and the blade in combination with the wall is adapted to shear tissue entering the aperture. A passage formed in the cutter body and communicating with the tube allows pressure differentials to be exerted to the tube.
