A method and apparatus for improving sound quality in a digital cellular radio system receiver. A voice activity detector uses an energy estimate to detect the presence of speech in a received speech signal in a noise environment. When no speech is present the system attenuates the signal and inserts low pass filtered white noise. In addition, a set of high pass filters are used to filter the signal based upon the background noise level. This high pass filtering is applied to the signal regardless of whether speech is present. Thus, a combination of signal attenuation with insertion of low pass filtered white noise during periods of non-speech, along with high pass filtering of the signal, improves sound quality when decoding speech which has been encoded in a noisy environment.

Méthode et appareil permettant d'améliorer la qualité du son dans un récepteur de système radio cellulaire numérique. Un détecteur d'activité vocale utilise une estimation d'énergie afin de détecter la présence de parole dans un signal téléphonique reçu en milieu bruyant. En l'absence de parole, le système atténue le signal et insère du bruit blanc filtré par filtre passe-bas. En outre, un ensemble de filtres passe-haut filtrent le signal en fonction du niveau de bruit de fond. Ce filtrage passe-haut est appliqué au signal sans égard à la présence de parole. Ainsi, l'atténuation du signal, l'insertion de bruit blanc filtré par filtre passe-bas pendant les périodes d'absence de parole, et le filtrage passe-haut du signal, produisent conjointement une amélioration de la qualité du son lors du décodage de signaux de parole qui ont été codés en milieu bruyant.
