25307-167 ABSTRACT A voice and data transmission system includes data circuit terminal equipment (DCE) connected between a subscriber's telephone equipment and data terminal on the one hand and one end of a telephone line on the other hand. The other end of the tele- phone line is connected to office channel equipment (OCE) also connected to a telephone exchange and data gathering equipment. By known multiplexing and demultiplexiny techniques voice and data signals can be transmitted along the same line. When power is deliberately or by reason of a fault removed from DCE relays come into operation to by-pass the main parts of DCE and OCE thereby permitting voice communication above. When power is restored, this is sensed and the by passes are removed so that normal operation of DCE and OCE is resumed.
