In an operator system (16) for providing services to subscribers (14) in a public telephone network (10), a circuit board (30) controls audio characteristics of audio signals in the public telephone network (10). The circuit board (30) comprises an interface (50) for receiving the audio signal from the public telephone network (10), an audio characteristics control circuit (52) coupled to the interface (50) for receiving the audio signal, adjusting the audio characteristics of the audio signal and for recording and generating voice messages to be transmitted to me public telephone network (10) via the interface (58) and a headset interface (56) coupled to the audio characteristics control circuit for receiving the adjusted audio signal and providing an interface to at least two headsets (44 and 46).
