A voice Internet transmission system which enables a person to have a conversation via the Internet (16) without having to use a computer at either end of the conversation, and without incurring long distance telephone charges regardless of the distance between those having the conversation. In a preferred embodiment, the apparatus consists of two non-Internet capable devices being enabled to connect to the Internet (16) and either in duplex or simplex mode transmit packets of Internet formatted data comprising digitized, compressed and encrypted conversation between the devices. In other words, a person can pick up an ordinary telephone (30) and converse with another person, regardlesss of the distance between them, without incurring long distance telephone charges. No special telephone is required, nor is a computer running a special software. The apparatus which makes this possible is a system of Internet access nodes or VoiceEngines (32, 34). These local Internet VoiceEngines (32, 34) provide digitized, compressed, and encrypted duplex or simplex Internet voice/sound communication services.

L'invention porte sur un système de transmission de la voix permettant à une personne d'avoir une conversation sur Internet (16) sans nécessiter un ordinateur à chacune des extrémités conversantes et sans facturer de taxes téléphoniques pour longues distances. Dans la variante préférée, le dispositif consiste en deux appareils non Internet pouvant se raccorder à Internet (16) et se transmettre en mode simplex ou duplex des paquets de données de conversation numériques, comprimées ou cryptées, en format Internet. En d'autres termes, une personne peut décrocher un téléphone ordinaire (30) et parler avec un interlocuteur quelque soit la distance et sans avoir à acquitter de taxes pour longues distances. Il n'est ni besoin de téléphone spécial, ni d'un ordinateur utilisant un logiciel spécial. L'appareil rendant l'opération possible est un système de noeuds d'accès à Internet, ou VoiceEngines (32, 34), qui permettent des liaisons Internet sonores/vocales numériques, comprimées ou cryptées en simplex ou en duplex.
