Rather than relying solely on a public-switched network (PSN) in order to leave a voice-mail message when a callee is not available take a call from a caller, communications are transferred to a packet-switched network, such as the Internet, and the voice- mail message from the caller to the callee is transmitted over the packet-switched network. For long- distance and other time-based toll calling, cost savings are provided as compared to conventional PSN-based voice-mail schemes in which the entire time that it takes to leave a voice-mail message is charged to either the caller or the callee on an incremental cost basis.
