ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a vocal tract model for use in a synthesizer for phoneticly synthesizing human speech. The vocal tract model is comprised of tunable filters and amplitude control devices which are responsive to input signal quantities to determine the frequency and amplitude parameters of phonemes to be output therefrom. An input device is provided for specifying selected phonemes to be output from the vocal tract model and the parameters thereof in a predetermined order. A control signal forming device is connected between the input device and the tunable filters and amplitude control devices for producing a plurality of variable duty cycle waveforms as input signals for controlling the frequency and amplitude characteristics of the selected phonemes.
