"VOLATILE LIQUID RECOVERY PROCESS" ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The feedstock comprises agglomerates of oil sand containing water and light hydrocarbon solvent. The feedstock is introduced into a downwardly inclined kiln having an externally heated pre-heat section. Here the feedstock is heated to about 100°C as it is advanced through the section. The heated feedstock then is advanced through an insulated stripping section of the kiln, in the course of which low pressure saturated steam is flowed countercurrently. The temperature of the feedstock is maintained at about 100°C in the stripping section. The solvent is vaporized and recovered from the kiln. Vaporization of water is suppressed by the steam flow.
