A fully integrated resonant type voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) circuit with one-octave tuning range for the generation of frequency signals is disclosed. The circuit comprises a current source to supply a bias current to a pair of NPN bipolar junction transistors (BJT) connected across a low-Q inductor. The forward bias base- emitter capacitance inherent to the BJT provides the capacitive component for the inductor- capacitor circuit, such that the circuit does not require the use of a varactor diode or any capacitor elements. Because the VCO circuit is tuned by current and not voltage, a wide tuning range is achieved with low voltages such that the VCO can oscillate at frequencies between 2.7GHz and 6.2GHz.
