- 1 - ABSTRACT Disclosed is a voltage regulator for an a.c. charging generator that has armature windings and a field winding. A battery receives the rectified output of the a.c, generator and is charged by the same. The voltage regulator regulates the output voltage of the a.c. generator by controlling the current flowing through the field winding. To prevent the output voltage of the generator from becoming too high if a connecting wire joining the rectified output of the generator to the battery is broken, the regulator includes an abnormality detection circuit that compares the rectified output of the generator with the battery voltage and detects an abnormality when these voltages differ by more than a predetermined value. This arrangement makes it possible to detect the abnormality at an early time before the output voltage of the generator has become harmfully high.
