A new combustion system for liquid fuels called the Vortex Flow Burner with Film Combustion has been devised in which the fuel is spread as a film over a hot surface and exposed to a swirling turbulent air stream. The vapour from the evaporating liquid burns in a reacting boundary layer. Complete and stable combustion of the fuel is achieved because hot combustion products are continuously recirculated into the combustion zone by the swirling air stream. There is no need to use fine-holed nozzles or high pressure since the fuel need not be atomized as in conventional combustion systems. This enables the new combustion system to handle different types of fuel including those contaminated with water, grit or other foreign matter. The flame temperature can be increased by enriching the air stream with oxygen. It is thus possible to incinerate liquids containing toxic material, such as PCBs.
