A walking exerciser has left and right operating assemblies, each of which includes front and rear swing rods, a hydraulic cylinder unit disposed on a base, a horizontal connecting rod connected pivotally and removably to the front and rear swing rods, and a pedal attached to the connecting rod. When the front and rear swing rods swing, the pedals turn forward and rearward in such a manner that the connecting rods are maintained at horizontal positions. When the rear swing rods are removed from the connecting rods and are then fastened to the base and when the connecting rods are connected pivotally to the hydraulic cylinder units, the pedals can be turned downward, after which the pedals are turned upward to their original positions by the hydraulic cylinder unit when the pedals are released.
