In a preferred embodiment, the unit is made up of an assembly of identical plastic extrusions stacked one on top of the other, in which each extrusion defines a number of laterally directed channels so that the assembly defines an array of parallel channels in the outer surface of the unit. Each channel is de- signed so that an article supporting element can be engaged therein.
