A tool (20) for applying mastic (mud) to drywalls during the installation thereof. The tool (20) has a quick opening feature for cleaning or manually filling a cavity with mastic. The tool (20) is pivotally connected on the end of a handle (24) with a controlled friction. A double-edged blade (74) shapes the mastic as it is applied to the wall. The blade (74) may be reversed when one edge becomes nicked or otherwise unusable.
