A B S T R A C T A glass ceramic top electric cooker having discrete cooking surfaces heated by radiant heaters includes warning means to indicate when one or more of the cooking surfaces is above a safe touching temperature of about 50 to 60° C This is achieved by arranging the radiant heaters (1) against the underside of the glass ceramic top (10) such that an enclosed chamber ( 11 ) is formed between the housing of the heater and the underside of the glass ceramic top. An opening (19) is formed in the housing of the heater which enables hot air to flow out of the enclosed chamber when the heater is energised. A thermally responsive element such as a bi-metallic switch (16) is located adjacent to the opening and is connected to operate a warning lamp when the bi-metallic switch is actuated.
