ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for determining and displaying an authorized speed limit on a road section making use of a pair of magnetic barriers embedded in the road and spaced apart by distances depending on the authorized speed limit, and a detector mounted on the vehicle. A tachometer provided on the vehicle generates pulses having a frequency depending on the instantaneous driving speed of the vehicle. The detection of each one of a pair of barriers gives a corresponding pulse pair, and the pulses generated by the tachometer and occurring between each pair of magnetic barrier pulses are counted to provide information as to the distance between the magnetic barriers. This informa- tion of distance is converted into authorized speed limit information by means of a time reference and is then displayed.
