ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus for use in washing elongate material in either flat or rope form comprising a plurality of roll means for causing the elongate material to pass lengthwise through the apparatus in a plurality of sequential passes, the roll means being positioned adjacent one another in a line trans- verse tot he direction of the passes, sharing common support frames and comprising at least one driving roll and one driven roll. The driven rolls are mounted on a frame for movement away from the driving rolls and a sensor is adapted to produce an appropriate signal to operate a frame-moving means for movement of the driven rolls when the level of elongate material in one pass exceeds a predetermined level, so as to intercept the material feed until the level of the materials in the pass is brought below the predetermined level.
