The invention provides a method and a system to harvest waste heat from large volumes of municipal solid waste in landfills or bioreactor landfills, transfer it out of the waste and utilize it to warm or heat for beneficial purposes other materials, such as soils, biofilters, sludges, slurries, liquids, or gasses, etc. The extraction and transfer of heat with the invention occurs passively, in a self-operating manner, and without addition of external energy inputs. In a preferred embodiment, the system harvests the heat with an evaporator section of pipe configured as a polygonal pyramidal spiral, transfers it with an insulated transfer section to a biofilter in the cover layer of the landfill, and disperses the heat to the biofilter medium through an ascending quadrangular prismatic spiral with six sides, thereby keeping the biofilter warm and working throughout the year.
