WASTE TREATMENT PURIFICATION SYSTEM ABSTRACT The invention relates to a process for treating industrial waste streams from polymerization processes. Among the materials which can be treated are those from the suspension polymerization of styrene, styrene acrylonitrile, and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene. The waste stream is first subjected to biological oxidation in a holding tank where microorganisms and solids settle out in a clarifier and the microorganisms are recycled to the bio-oxidation step. Bottoms from the settling step are transferred to a sludge pit. A portion of the sludge can be recycled to the bio-oxidation step and/or disposed of in some other manner. Chemical sedimentation treatment is next employed in order to separate solid waste material from the waste stream. Chemical flocculation is achieved by means of conventional materials such as lime, aluminum sulfate or commercial flocculants. The bottoms from the flocculation are sent to the sludge pit and the clear treated liquid can be transferred to a river or other body of water for disposal.
