ABSTRACT A process is disclosed for the treatment of decomposable organic based waste materials and decomposable organic refuse suitable for use on a municipal or urban scale. In one aspect the process includes the steps of aerobically decomposing organic based waste material in a digester for about 4 days in a temperature range of about 44-73°C followed by an anaerobic decomposition (fermentation) step of about 22 days carried out in the same digester. Exhaust gases produced during the aerobic decomposition step are purified prior to being discharged to the atmosphere while biogas produced during the anaerobic decomposition step is collected which may be utilized in power generating applications. The process provides a decomposed material characterized by low N2 loss and which is sterilized with respect to pathogenic bacteria and parasites such as worm ova. The resulting decomposed waste material is then discharged from the digester and dried followed by pulverizing. The pulverized material is then sieved to collect particles below about .5 cm in diameter with the latter being subsequently mixed with a known chemical fertilizer and the resulting mixture granulated to produce a granulated fertilizer.
