ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Contaminants present in waste water are removed by using a material which comprises a finely divided substance capable of selectively adsorbing the contaminants due to its physiochemical activity and an organic high polymer carrier supporting the finely divided substance. The finely divided substance is selected from an active carbon and compounds containing at least one metal of calcium, magnesium, zinc, lead, iron, aluminum barium, manganese, cobalt, nickel, tin, strontium and copper. The material has a specific surface area of more than 0.5 m2/g and a fibrous or flake-like struc- ture wherein the carrier and the finely divided substance are in a complex form of being substantially uniformly integrated with each other The material is prepared by the method comprising mixing the finely divided substance with at least 5% by weight, based on the weight of the finely divided sub- stance, of an organic high polymeric material and a solvent capable of dissolving or swelling the organic high polymeric material at an elevated temperatures heating the mixture at a temperature higher than the boiling point of the solvent in a closed vessel, thereby dissolving or swelling the organic high polymeric material to form a slurry, and then extruding the slurry under its autogeneous or higher pressure through an orifice into an environment of a lower pressure. - 1 -
