Waste water treatment uses a combination of continuous and discontinuous water flow in a activation tank, where the required activated sludge concentration is maintained by interrupting an activation process during a period of reduced waste water supply into the equalizing tank, from where the waste water is re-pumped into the activation tank after having accomplished the sludge sedimentation, the excess sludge is pumped off in one lot and the continuous water flow in the activation tank is automatically re-established by raising the waste water level in the equalizing tank.
