A wastebasket incorporating a bag retaining mechanism for securely maintain garbage bags in an open position in the wastebasket is disclosed herein. The bag retaining mechanism includes a generally closed member pivotally mounted to the wastebasket to be movable between bag retaining and releasing positions and including bag contacting elements. When the closed member is in the bag retaining position, the bag contacting elements and the peripheral edge of the wastebasket sandwich the garbage bag to thereby increase the friction force between the garbage bag and the wastebasket. A lid opening mechanism to selectively open a lid of the wastebasket is also described herein. The lid opening mechanism includes a detachable biasing element to bias the lid in a closed position.
