ABSTRACT A process is disclosed for treating wastewaters with a powdered adsorbent and one or more fixed media filters, wherein biological oxidation occurs. The adsorbent is optionally regenerated and reused. In multistage operation, adsorbent is contacted with wastewater in stagewise countercurrent flow, through each fixed media filter and subsequent clarifier, or through clarifier only.
