ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A watchdog timer detects when a microcomputer runs out of control or malfunctions. A program for controlling the microcomputer is arranged to produce an access signal in each period while the microcomputer operates normally. In the absence of such an access signal within a prescribed period, the watchdog timer generates a malfunction signal indicting that the microcomputer runs out of control, for automatically resetting the microcomputer.
