A process for the preparation of a monomer-grafted cross-linked polymer comprising the steps of: i) activating the polymer by irradiation; ii) quenching the activated polymer so as to effect cross-linking therein; iii) activating the cross-linked polymer by irradiation; iv) contacting the activated cross-linked polymer with an emulsion which comprises: a) an unsaturated monomer; b) an emulsifier; and c) water, for a time sufficient to effect the desired extent of grafting.

L'invention concerne un procédé de préparation d'un polymère réticulé greffé avec un monomère, consistant i) à activer le polymère au moyen d'une irradiation; ii) à durcir brusquement le polymère activé afin d'y effectuer une réticulation; iii) à activer le polymère réticulé au moyen d'une irradiation; iv) à mettre en contact le polymère activé réticulé avec une émulsion qui comprend: a) un monomère insaturé; b) un émulsifiant; et c) de l'eau, pendant un temps suffisant pour effectuer l'extension de greffe désirée.
