ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Aqueous compositions are employed to form a protective coating on metal surfaces, in particular, ferrous or tin surfaces, and are especially useful for the coating of blackplate or tin- plated cans. The compositions contain, in the form of an aqueous emulsion, an epoxy resin, an alkylated melamine-formaldehyde resin, an acid catalyst, a block copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide and water. The composition is applied to a clean metal surface by any conventional technique and over-cured to provide a protective paint-receptive coating.
