- 1 - ABSTRACT AN IMPROVED WATER COOLED NUCLEAR REACTOR WITH A DIAPHRAGM PRESSURIZER FOR LOW PRESSURES AND TEMPERATURES A water cooled nuclear reactor (10) comprises a reactor core (14), a primary water coolant circuit (24,26) and a pressuriser (62) arranged as an integral unit in a pressure vessel (12). The pressure vessel (12) is divided into an upper chamber (30) and a lower chamber (32) by a casing (28), the reactor core (14) and primary coolant circuit (24, 26) are arranged in the lower chamber (32) and the pressuriser (62) is arranged in the upper chamber (30). A movable diaphragm (64) is positioned in the upper chamber (30), and is sealingly secured to the casing (12) by a bellows (68) arrangement to divide the upper chamber (30) into a water filled space (70) and a gas filled space (72). A plurality of surge ports (74) interconnect the water space (70) with the primary coolant circuit. The diaphragm (64) moves to accommodate changes in the volume or pressure of the water in the primary coolant circuit (24, 26) and water space (70). The diaphragm (64) is loaded by springs (76) and dampers (78) to prevent oscillation of the diaphragm (64). Alternatively the diaphragm may be an elastic membrane.
