P2222.01 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A reciprocating traveling carriage supporting a fluid-carrying lance in a soot blower assembly. A single reversible motor drives an endless chain over a pair of primary sprockets supported on shafts passing through the housing of a traveling carriage. The shafts are further provided with spur gears having different number of teeth which, however, engage one another. In operation, the endless chain rotates the primary sprockets which causes the spur gears to rotate at un- equal speeds due to the unequal number of teeth on each spur gear. Since the links of the endless chain necessarily move at a constant speed, the traveling carriage will advance along the endless chain in order to compensate for the different speeds of rotation of the spur gears. Simultaneously, the lance is rotated about its longitudinal axis as it is driven along the endless chain. The rotation is also accomplished by the driving output of the single motor, A flexible hose provides fluid to the lance. The flexible hose is supported by a trough-shaped underlying support. Additionally, parallel guide rails are provided which extend longitudinally beneath the lance and on both sides of the flexible hose. When the traveling carriage and lance are reciprocated, the flexible hose is rolled out of the support, yet is maintained in relative vertical position by the guide rails.
