-12- ABSTRACT A water heater element assembly comprises a sheathed element 10, a copper flange 12, an insulating gasket 14 and a mild steel clamping plate 16. The gasket 14 has sleeves 44 that fit through holes 50-in plate 16 and through which sheathed tube ends can extend. Holes 22 secure the assembly to a support 20 within a heater housing. To assemble flange 12 is brazed to element 10 then gasket 14 with sleeves 44 is sandwiched between flange 12, element 10 and plate 16. The assembly is fixed together by rivetting (hot or cold), welding, ultrasonic welding or suitable adhesive bonding such that a fillet is created by sleeves 44 between element 10 and plate 16. Gasket 14 may also have a post 40 with a slot (not shown) to cradle a resistor (not shown) the leads of which are connected during assembly with flange 12 and (through aperture 54) with plate 16. Sleeves 44 are preferably formed integral with the gasket 14 but could be made as separate elements.
