A pump frame (7) incorporates an upper connection opening (17), a lower introduction opening (19) and a water passage (21) for connecting the two openings. To cause the introduction opening (19) to be opened in water at a position adjacent a stern 1a, the pump frame (7) is joined to a bottom (1b). A pump casing (9) is secured to be stood erect above the pump frame (7). The pump casing (9) includes an impeller shaft (33) stood erect. The impeller shaft (33) is provided with an impeller (11) for sucking water below the bottom (1b) through the introduction opening (19) so as to pressurize water. Water pressurized by the impeller (11) is jetted to a position in the rear of the stern (1a) through a discharge pipe (13). As a result, a ship (1) is propelled. The foregoing water jet propulsion apparatus (5) enables sucking performance free from cavitation and excellent propelling performance to be obtained.

Selon cette invention, une coque (7) de pompe comporte un orifice de raccordement (17) dans sa partie supérieure, un orifice d'arrivée d'eau (19) dans sa partie inférieure et un passage pour l'eau pompée (21) assurant la communication entre lesdits orifices; elle est montée sur la carène (1b) d'un navire de manière à ce que l'orifice d'arrivée d'eau (19) s'ouvre dans l'eau à proximité de la poupe (1a). Un corps de pompe (9) est fixé en position debout à une partie supérieure de la coque (7) de pompe. Un arbre (33) de roue hélice est logé verticalement dans le corps de pompe (9); une roue hélice (11) montée sur ledit arbre aspire l'eau à travers l'orifice d'arrivée d'eau (19) sous la carène (1b) pour la mettre sous pression. L'eau mise sous pression par la roue hélice (11) est rejetée par un tuyau d'éjection (13) à l'arrière de la poupe (1a), ce qui propulse le navire (1). Le dispositif de propulsion par jet d'eau (5) faisant l'objet de cette invention est caractérisé par une aspiration exempte de cavitation et par une propulsion hautement efficace.
