ABSTRACT In a water power station, the runner (4) of the water turbine (2) is connected through a gear train (6) to the electrical generator (8). Between this gear train (6) and the generator (8) there is a coupling (9), e.g., an hydraulically operated plate coupling, which can be engaged and disengaged when under load, and this disengages the generator (8) in the event that the maximally permitted speed is exceeded. This makes it possible to use a cost-effective generator having a high nominal speed which, despite this, can survive a run-away turbine without suffering any damage and does not have to be made so as to be resistant to run-away speeds.
