The present invention relates to a cable, in particular an optical fibre cable, which is resistant to the radial permeation and to the longitudinal propagation of water. This cable comprises a water-soluble polymer material, characterized in that the said material is a water-swellable and water-soluble material. In particular, this cable is characterized in that, following the ingress of water into this cable, the propagation of water is impeded on account of the combined effect of the swelling of the water-soluble material and the formation of an aqueous solution of the said material which has a predetermined viscosity, so as to impede the passage of the residual water. Preferably, the water-soluble material is chosen from polyacrylamide, modified polyvinyl alcohol, vinyl alcohol/vinyl acetate copolymers, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and mixtures thereof, the material preferably being a vinyl alcohol/vinyl acetate copolymer. The material can advantageously be extruded to form tubular elements for containing optical fibres, for example two-layer tubular elements in which the inner layer is made of water-soluble material and the outer layer is made of a conventional polymer such as PE, PP or PBT.

L'invention concerne un câble, en particulier un câble à fibres optiques, qui résiste à la perméance radiale et à la propagation longitudinale de l'eau. Ce câble est fait d'un matériau polymère soluble et gonflable dans l'eau. Il est caractérisé en particulier en ce que, lors de l'entrée de l'eau dans le câble, la propagation de celle-ci est gênée par l'effet combiné du matériau gonflable et soluble dans l'eau et de la formation d'une solution acqueuse au niveau dudit matériau, dont la viscosité prédéterminée permet de faire obstacle au passage de l'eau résiduelle. De préférence, le matériau soluble dans l'eau est un polyacrylamide, poly(alcool) de vinyle modifié, copolymère d'alcool vinylique/d'acétate de vinyle, polyvinylpyrrolidone ou un mélange de ces derniers, le copolymère d'alcool vinylique/d'acétate de vinyle étant le matériau idéal. Pour un meilleur résultat, on peut extruder le matériau afin d'obtenir des éléments tubulaires destinés à contenir les fibres optiques, par exemple, des éléments tubulaires composés de deux couches, la couche interne étant faite d'un matériau soluble dans l'eau et la couche externe d'un polymère classique tel que PE, PP ou PBT.
