An apparatus is disclosed for flushing fluid through a fluid conduit, e.g. for automatically flushing urinals. A preferred urinal flushing apparatus comprises a) an infra-red sensor for detecting the presence of a person, and for sending a detection signal to a controller; b ) a valve connected to a water supply for flushing water to the urinals or to a header for the urinals; c) the controller. The controller contains i) a first timer for counting down a first predetermined time interval after the sensor has detected the presence of a person, ii) means for opening the valve, iii) means for ignoring detection signals sent to the controller during the first predetermined time interval and iv) means either to a) open the valve when the first predetermined time interval expires, and to close the valve after a second predetermined time interval has expired. The controller may also have a timer for flushing the urinal after a long period of inactivity, in order to avoid the P-traps going dry. Another embodiment of the apparatus is useful for preventing freezing of pipes in cold weather.
