ABSTRACT: 6-Aminopenicillanic acid is prepared by enzymatic degradation of benzylpenicillin or of phenoxymethylpenicillin at pH 6.0-9.0 using a novel water-soluble enzyme complex derived from a penicillin deacylase enzyme bonded to a water-soluble polymeric material, the formed 6-aminopenicillanic acid being separated from the complex by an ultrafiltration technique, the said complex being recycled for re-use and the formed 6-aminopenicillanic acid being recovered. Preferably the complex is formed from a maleic acid copolymer or a modified polysaccharide, especially from a sucrose-epichlorhyarin copolymer.
