Abstract Water-soluble, non-ionic X-ray contrast agents and method of preparing them New, non-ionic, monomeric and dimeric X-ray contrast agents with low osmotic pressure and very good solubility in water are described, wherein methylene groups are inserted into side chains of triiodised benzoic acid or triiodised isophthalic acid. Furthermore, a method of preparing these compounds is described, wherein a 5-acylamido-2,4,6-triiodoisophthalic acid amide or a 3,5-diacylamido-2,4,6-triiodobenzoic acid amide or 3,5-diacylamido-2,4,6-triiodobenzoic acid is reacted with an alkylation medium of the formula Image in a basic environment, where X signifies a halogen, a sulphonic acid ester or a common leaving group.
